Safety for People With Disabilities
Speak with the Fire Department
You should speak with someone about what you
should do in case of a fire in our home. Your family, friends, the fire department or a
social service agency should be able to assist in developing an escape plan you can
practice. Practice with people who with or nearby you.
Suggestions
Live near an EXIT, if you live in an apartment you
should try to occupy one on the ground floor. If you live in a two story home, arrange to
sleep on the bottom floor. Have your telephone next to your bed.
Install smoke detectors and test them weekly. Change the batteries at least once a
year. If your smoke detectors are 10 years old or more, they should be replaced with new
ones.
Remember: Call 911
if you smell any smoke or see any fire. Dont wait.
